Mandatory Insurance For Travelling

Assistance and Travel Insurance

It is essential to take out a travel insurance when you go abroad. It covers situations that are rarely covered by simple cancellation insurances. You are guaranteed the right to receive compensations for damages caused or suffered during your trip. It also covers luggage loss, repatriation, accident, or medical costs. Before you take out a travel insurance, make you sure you have compared all the offers on the market. There are some good comparison tools online such as on the website tourdumondiste.com.

Good to know: Holders of some credit cards already have a health and travel insurance. Indeed, your bank contract may include some interesting insurance-related options which are usually applicable for the transport tickets you bought with this specific card. Ask your bank for more information. It would be a shame to miss out on it!

Don’t forget: You should always make sure that the insurance you take out includes public liability coverage abroad. If it does, in case of an accident, fees will also be covered.

A travel assistance insurance is an option that ensures you to be assisted 24/7 when you move abroad. Just like medical repatriation, hospitalisation, or legal assistance abroad, it must be included in your travel insurance!

This assistance insurance is mandatory for travelling abroad with our association.

The SVI offers you a cheap assistance travel insurance for projects under 3 months long

The SVI has negotiated, with Assur-Travel, an insurance agreement at an advantageous price for its members.

If you want to subscribe it, ask your coordinator for the form once you have been accepted on your project. The general conditions will be stated on this form but, basically, this insurance covers:

  • Medical fees abroad (up to 75,000€).
  • Accident or medical repatriation.
  • Anticipated return in the event of the decease or hospitalisation of a family member in Belgium.

The insurance premium must be paid 7 days before your departure date at the latest. The assistance insurance is mandatory for all members going out of Europe, whether they take out the “Assur Travel” insurance or that of any other company (in the latter case, volunteers will be required to provide us with an insurance certificate).

  • From 1 to 30 days: 30€
  • From 31 to 60 days: 45€
  • From 61 to 90 days: 50€

Find more information here.

For projects over 3 months long, the SVI recommends “Globe Trotteur”

For those who wish to undertake an over-3-month-long project abroad, the SVI recommends the “Globe Trotteur” insurance. Click here for more information.

In any case, don’t forget to:

  • Keep your insurance number on you. Your insurer will always be able to find your name in their lists, but it may be quicker if you can directly provide them with your number.
  • Ask for administrative reports (e.g. police reports) stating the nature and circumstances of the incident.
  • Keep your insurance company’s phone number on you (especially if you must be repatriated for health issues) and address (if this company demands you to send them a registered letter in case of damages).
  • Ask for supporting documents if you face a problem: medical certificates, bills (medicines, telephone, …), photos, etc.
  • Take all these necessary administrative steps as quickly as possible.

Caution! We are only an intermediary between you and the insurer. If you wish to cancel your project, we will only refund you half of your membership fees, not the insurance fees.

Cancellation Insurance

Going on a language project abroad often requires buying a plane ticket, which is always a significant financial investment. A cancellation insurance protects you financially in the event you have no choice but to cancel or postpone your departure.

A cancellation insurance allows you, under certain conditions, to get a refund for your trip. Conditions and ceilings may vary depending on the insurance contract. Read it carefully before you sign it!

Possible reasons for cancellation and unforeseen events usually covered by these insurances:

  • Health issues: disease, unforeseen operation, accident and/or decease.
  • Events disrupting your daily life: economic lay-off, cancellation by the employer of previously approved holiday, new employment contract, any damages caused to your home or vehicle, boarding delays.
  • Exceptional circumstances: denied visas, unavailable vaccines, summons to serve as a juror.

During your travels abroad

In any case, don’t forget to:

  • Always keep your insurance number on you. This number is important for your insurer to find your file more easily when you communicate.
  • Always keep your insurance company’s phone number and address on you. These are crucial information if you want to reach them quickly. It is also very important if you need to be repatriated for health reasons or if your company demands you to send them documents by registered letter.
  • Ask for administrative reports (e.g. police reports) stating the nature and circumstances of the incident.
  • Ask for supporting documents if you face a problem: medical certificates, bills (medicines, telephone, …), photos, etc.
  • Take all these necessary steps as quickly as possible.
